Hagoita is battledore (early form of badminton racket) .
Hagoita, or wooden paddle, originated from a Japanese tradition, where during the New Year girls would play Hanetsuki, a badminton-like game with wooden paddles and a shuttlecock.
Originally wooden paddles are hand-made, using the finest cotton or washi paper. The paddles vary in size, representing a girl's growth, and also symbolize health and safety.
